Hohoho, selamat malam, artikel ini akan membahas tentang Speed Techniques in Fingerstyle Guitar - The Guitar Journal simak selengkapnya
Many players transition from using a old select to playing fingerstyle guitar because it gives them better control, tone, also connection accompanied by the instrument. But fingerstyle can make it experience harder to have fun quick lead lines also melodies. So how work you keep up the rate supported by single-line melodies also solos?
One of the advantages of a traditional pick is that it allows quick single-note picking using established techniques similar to interchanging picking also cross-picking.
Fingerstyle guitarists can still have fun extremely fast, though, also arguably faster in some scenarios similar to cross-picking also arpeggios.
So here are some approaches to increase your rate when you transfer away from the select also into fingerstyle guitar.
The Classical Approach
If you’re familiar accompanied by classical guitar, you’re probably also familiar accompanied by PIMA. PIMA is a signs system intended your strumming/picking hand that uses the acronym to place your digits: P = Thumb, I = Index, M = Middle, A = Ring finger. For full explanation, see here.
Using that method when a shorthand (no pun intended), we can see that classical guitarists typically come to single-note playing by:
- Using i-m or m-i fingering, simply interchanging the two fingers.
- For yarn skipping, you can also use the i-a, a-i, m-a, or a-m patterns. These patterns incorporate the ring finger.
- And intended extremely quick notes, you can practice the way of using i-m-a or a-i-m, coordinating the three fingers intended extremely quick playing.
The School of Rock
Fingerstyle players from the school of rock – folks similar to Mark Knopfler also Derek Trucks – often interchange the thumb also listing digit to have fun quick licks also solos.
The way it works is that you use the thumb to have fun downstrokes also the listing digit to have fun upstrokes, all supported by the same string.
You use the same way to transfer between strings.
As one commentator described in this discussion:
“…the interchange plucks are more similar to a snaps where the yarn sort of gets passed back also forth between thumb also listing finger…”
This way determination not get you to Kirk Hammett levels of rate picking, but it does make other facets of picking way easier: yarn skipping also arpeggiation, in particular.
O Come, O Come Emmanuel
Tommy Emmanuel, in the spirit of Chet Atkins, favors a hybrid approach. By using a thumb select also fingers, he can get the finest of both worlds.

During the rhythm parts of the song, he uses the thumb pick to have fun the bass notes, also then his fingers to have fun the higher strings.
For single-note lines, though, he often uses the thumb select similar to a old pick, blazing via straight-ahead rock, blues, also jazz licks.
One-Size-Fits-All?
There are more approaches out there. Guitar has a great diversification of approaches, of course, from Wes Montgomery’s “thumb” to Van Halen‘s finger-tapping.
One thing we should remember, though, is that there’s not at all single way that determination work in each and every situation.
There is not once one style of playing that determination allow you to perform excellently across all genre, all songs, also in each and every environment.
We keep to choose the finest way intended the moment, even air to song.
And, I suppose, at the end of the day, we must humbly acknowledge that there are certain things we determination not work well. We may not once light wind via a jazz solo similar to Wes, or blister the front row accompanied by the intro to Eruption.
But we can choose the right tool intended the air in front of us.
Have some other players also techniques that should exist mentioned? Put ’em in the comments below!
